Travel
All participants will fly into Bangalore individually. Those who wish may book flights together in advance. Participants will need to book flights for arrival in India on July 20.

Geeta and I are excited to take you on this journey through South India and have been working hard to come up with an itinerary which will include: a temple city, an ashram stay, coastal visits, an elephant camp, a safari, and so much more! Tentative itinerary

Day 1:  Meet by 4PM at a designated hotel in Bangalore

  • Introductions, group orientation, short walk, dinner, sleep

Day 2:  6AM Depart for Mysore by road in chartered bus  

  • Visit Big Banyan Tree, or locally called the Dodda Aladhe Mara. This is a giant 400-year-old Banyan tree, located in the village of Kettohalli.
  • Stop enroute at Chennapatna, meaning town of toys.  This place is famous for locally made wooden toys, that are coloured with local plant dyes and lacquered. Many designs of these traditional toys have been reproduced all over the world, but some are still only found here.
  • In Mysore - visit Goddess Chamundi temple
  • Eat a traditional ragi meal (local finger millet) 

Day 3:  Mysore

  • Local vegetable/flower market
  • Karnataka State Music University, Mysore to experience the Indian classical music and dance teaching styles
  • Visit the beautiful and famous Mysore Palace
  • Visit Ranganthittu Kaveri river bird sanctuary - take a boat ride among six small islands to observe the nesting behaviors of heron, egret, storks and other water birds, as well as Indian crocodiles

Day 4:  Depart early for  Biligiri Rangan Tiger Reserve Hills

  • Visit the reserve with local expert ecologist Siddappa, a long time resident and researcher at ATREE non-profit conservation organization
  • Visit local silk cottage industry - these are families that raise silk worms and extract silk in their homes

Day 5:  Wildlife Safari in the Tiger Reserve

  • Walk to Soliga villages and learn about their way of life
  • Visit Soliga local honey processing/fruit drying/coffee/pepper plantation
  • Visit Biligiri Rangan temple on the mountain peak that over-looks the Eastern Ghats
  • Enjoy a cultural evening with the Soliga dance and music traditions

Day 6:  Depart for Coimbatore

  •  Visit Somanathapura temple - a beautiful temple made during the Hoysala kingdom in the 13th century
  • Evening - to Coimbatore
  • Isha Foundation Ashram - the Ashram created by the well-known mystic Sadguru (Ishafoundation.org)

Day 7:  Isha Ashram Day

  • Evening depart to Dindigal city

Day 8:  Dindigal (Geeta's friend's farm house)

  • Do yoga, walk the farm, cook 

Day 9:  Visit Top Slip Elephant Camp

  • Observe bathing, preparation of meals and feeding of the elephants by their mahouts.  This relationship between a mahout and his elephant is very intimate much like a parent-child bond.  So only the mahouts feed and bathe their elephants.
  • Visit the reclining goddess temple, Devi mandir

Day 10:  Drive to Thanjavur temple town for a day visit

  • Evening drive to Pondicherry

Day 11:  Pondicherry

  • Early morning walk the beach
  • Visit Aurovile Ashram of Sri Aurobindo or Sanskrit workshop with teacher, Shri Sampadananda Mishra 

Day 12:  Pondicherry

  • Early morning walk the beach
  • Hand made paper factory
  • Ashram international school, Sri Aurobindo and Mother's samadhi
  • Outdoor movie show if available

Day 13:  Pondicherry

  • Visit to Mahabalipuram beach temple
  • Overnight sleeper bus to Bangalore

Day 14:  Bangalore 

  • Heritage walk - early morning Lal Bagh gardens with the exposed original pangea rock, and amazing gigantic trees
  • MTR tiffin - very traditional family run restaurant that is a classic must visit place for several generations.
  • Shopping evening (optional)

Day 15:  Check out of hotel - Depart for U.S.
